Baroque
The baroque movement
took place between the years 1500 and 1700 but was most popular during the
1600’s. The art focused predominantly on religious themes and the Catholic
Church. Artwork of the baroque movement was always very grand and was typically
done on a very large scale. The paintings used large brush strokes and swirling
lines to show a lot of dynamic movement (Supper at Emmaus). Caravaggio was a
famous baroque painter who lived from 1571 to 1610. One of his paintings is
called Supper at Emmaus. This
painting follows the typical subject matter of baroque art and depicts Jesus
after the Resurrection. The painting uses dynamic lines to but the subjects in
motion. The lighting also but the focus onto the people, primarily Jesus, and
adds to the grand style of the painting. The exact date of the painting is
unknown but it was probably created around 1602.
