Cubism
Cubism was an art movement that came into being in the early 1900’s. It was started by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque (Rewald). Artists who follow cubism turn complex lines into abstract geometric shapes referred to as cubes. This is an effort to emphasis the 2D qualities of the canvas on which the painting was made (Rewald). Cubism is opposite of realism because it does not attempt to depict things in the same way that they appear in real life. One of Pablo Picasso’s cubism pieces is Bottle and Wine Glass on a Table. The artwork is extremely abstract and uses many straight lines and edged figures to depict curvy objects such as the bottle. This piece is particularly interesting because it utilizes newspaper to add color and texture to the piece.
