Italian Renaissance
The Renaissance was a major art movement in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries. The artists of
this movement looked to the ancient Greeks and Romans as inspiration for their art. There art
was very grand and focus on logic and reason. Raphael is one of the most popular artists of the
Renaissance and was born on March 28, 1483. One of his popular works is the School of Athens.
This painting depicts many genius thinkers that were looked up to by the people of the
Renaissance. The painting uses dark figures on a light background which allows the people, who
are the main focus of the painting, to stick out more. He also uses different shapes in the peoples’
positioning to make the painting look like a picture taken with people standing or lying wherever
they were. This makes the painting look more realistic and less like a drawing of inanimate
figures.
